This week, I’m up to my ears in workshop preparations, project proposals, text rewrites and design planning. Who said goals have to be glamorous, right? If you’re goal-oriented, too, then you’ll be interested in some of these cool contests. There’s nothing like a deadline to get your rear in gear!Here’s a new contest from Interweave Press that’s like American Idol but for beaders. Winning entries will be published in Bead Star magazine, the first-ever beading publication comprised entirely of prize-winning designs selected by beaders worldwide!Besides fame, winners will also receive exciting prizes, including an all-expense paid trip for two to Bead Expo in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in March 2009. Photographs due May 6, 2008.

For the past few years, Swarovski has sponsored a prestigious design contest for students, amateurs and professionals. This year, the theme is “Be Naturally Inspired.” Daniel Swarovski saw nature as the perfect designer ? as well as an inexhaustible source of ideas.
Today, Swarovski enthusiastically supports international environmental projects and draws inspiration for its designs from nature. Contest applications are due May 16, 2008.

If purses are more your bag (har, har), then you won’t want to miss this reader challenge from Make It Mine. The editors want to know: “What wild, weird, or simply unpurselike thing have our readers turned into a purse.”

The idea is simple: Transform something (anything) into a fabulous purse and upload your pix to the online challenge gallery. The top three vote getters will receive a $75 Visa gift card. Voting ends June 18, 2008.

Part of why I love beading is because so much of it is about color. Beads are like these little three-dimensional color droplets that we get to play with and mix together.Of course color inspiration comes from the whole world around us, but I also get a kick out of doing color research and thought you might, too. Here are a few new resources for fellow color hounds:

The Pantone Fashion Color Reports for Spring 2008 and Fall 2008 are available for free download. I print these out and hang them in my studio. When I’m stuck for new color combinations, I often refer to them. And, I’m sure they influence my color choices even when I’m not consciously trying to expand my palette.
The Color Report for Bead Artists by Margie Deeb is an awesome 15-page PDF containing over 40 combinations and ideas for mixing gemstones, Delicas and other beads based on Pantone’s fashion color report. This is a powerful resource for beaders and other three-dimensional artists because it helps you interpret the fashion color report in a way that makes sense for what we do.
Fire Mountain Gems recently sent me a sample of the new Pantone Colorstrology cards. They show a color for each day of the month and include personality traits for people born under that color. The sample is for the month of May, so it’s been fun to see how they describe my friends with May birthdays. (Candie Cooper, your color is Mandarin Orange - and I’m not even kidding!)
