No more boring window treatments now that beaded curtains are back! Oh, you may think this is a flashback to the 1960s, but beaded curtains have made a comeback in a whole new way. Groovier than ever designs create exciting plays on light and texture and even work as room dividers.
Where to Use Beads
There are several ways to including beading in your window designs. The entire curtain can be made of beads and hang in colourful strands from the top of the window right down to the floor. This makes a great room divider and can be hung from the top of a doorway. It is ideal for areas you want to define, but not completely close off from one another.
Beads can be strung in such a way to create beautiful mosaics. The finished designs will appear as intricate tapestry, or can be as simple as a monochromatic hanging of different transparencies of glass or plastic beads. Even wooden beads can be used to create a natural looking window treatment.
Beaded curtains can also be used to close off a closet area. This works well in smaller rooms where closet doors may take up too much space when opened and closed.
Using Beads in Curtain Design
Full curtains made of beads are not the only way to incorporate beads into the overall look of the window dressing. Beads can be sewn into fabric to add sparkle and interest. Use contrasting colours, or simply reflect light with a tone on tone bead sewn in random patterns across the fabric.
Beads also make an elegant edging to drapes, sheers or curtains. Imagine a café style curtain in a sunroom or family room with a fringe of beads. The room instantly becomes a casual but stylish place for the whole family.
Adding a fringe of beads along formal drapes creates a more formal and elegant look ideal for the living room. You can even dress up furniture with throw pillows accented with the same beaded edging as the drapes.
Beading Even For Those Who Hate to Sew
For those who find sewing too big a chore, you can purchase ready made drapes or curtains and add your own bead work. Some fringes are designed with a nice heavy backing that can even be hot glued into place. However, keep in mind that sewing will give it a more professional looking finish that will stand up to dry cleaning or laundering much better than craft glues.
Decorating with beads is easy and fun and a quick home improvement fix. It's like a mini-makeover. Adding new window treatments or beads to existing curtains or drapes will give the room a decorator feel at a fraction of the cost.
Using full beaded curtains or drapes is also an excellent face lift for closet doors or room dividers. Swag them back with a decorative rope tie and you'll have sweeping frame full of light and colour as the entry into your most stylish rooms.

Even if you have organized your retirement to include travel, hikes, golf, bowls, book clubs and grandchildren, after the initial flush of free time fades, you might find that there are periods when you need a little more mental stimulation. While indulging in your hobbies, with probably a lot more gusto that you previously had time for, you might consider the possibility of actually earning some money from them. Now, I don't mean selling your wares, but of course if they are easily posted ebay can be a great marketplace for you. What I am referring to you is selling you knowledge. Whether it is sports, crafts, cookery or photography, you could use your retirement to join thousands of others who are making a profit out of their skills. The secret to making money from what I'll call your collective "hobbies" is to approach the project as a labor of love. Love of your hobby. If you can remember back to the days when you first started your hobby, you were keen to gather as much information as you could about how to master it. Learning about the different methods, patterns, tools etc that could be used was a great adventure. You may still be on the journey! With the aid of the internet, you are able to share your knowledge not just with your grandchild (who may not be interested anyway) but with people around the world who want to know how to master that particular hobby. Who knows? You could be a master at it, without even knowing.Writing an e-book is a very easy thing to do, and couples who work together on these projects often enjoy the whole process. Learn how to create a simple website to use as your sales page (don't be scared - its easy with a capital E) - another great skill that you will use over and over again. Include how-to photos are great - heck you can even make a short "how to" movie with your digital camera and post it on You Tube, linking back to your web page. There are very easy methods that automate payment and direct download of the document you create.Take the time to do a Google search to see what information is already available on your hobby, and see if you can do something similar, but better. It's important to not over-value your e-book or article. It is much better to have 1000 purchasers at $10 than 100 at $25!

Are you having a battle keeping your plastic grocery bags organized and in one place? Making a dish towel bag caddy is a great way to keep your recyclable plastic bags organized and handy. These simple instructions are easy to follow and you will be able to make one for every room in your home and garage in just minutes.

Your bag caddy can easily be stored in your kitchen by hanging it from a magnetic hook on the side of your refrigerator. Or, if you prefer to keep it out of sight, place it inside of a kitchen cabinet or under the sink. Another great use would be to hang it in your bedroom closets, linen closets or bathroom cabinets. By placing a terry cloth bag caddy in these areas, it will keep your recyclable bags nice and handy for emptying the waste baskets (especially if you have a two story home), and will save you time! Also, hanging one in your garage or laundry room will also come in use. If you have a pet, it makes it easy to grab a recyclable plastic bag from your bag caddy to take with you when walking your pet.

For this project you will need the following supplies:

1 Decorative terry cloth dish towel: We chose one with a fringe edge on it. 1 Roll of thread: White or any coordinating color to match your dish towel. Sewing needle Satin ribbon: 8in. length Straight pins

Step 1: Fold the terry cloth dish towel in half with the right sides together and the wrong sides facing out.

Step 2: Secure the ends in place with straight pins all along the open side of the dish towel.

Step 3: Using your needle and thread (or sewing machine), sew a ¼ inch seam down the pinned side and be sure to remove your straight pins and cut off any loose threads.

Step 4: Next, fold your ribbon in half creating an 8 inch length. Stitch your ribbon to the top right side of the dish towel to form a loop (see below for photos).

Step 5: Turn the bag right side out and insert your recyclable plastic bags in to the bag caddie by filling it from either end until it is full.

There you have it. An organized bag caddy for your recyclable plastic bags that is a useful and practical sewing craft project, and is also a wonderful green craft project if you decide to recycle and use an older towel rather than throw it out to the trash or garage.

Think it can't be done? Think again – an apron is a very simple thing to sew, and you can easily make your own pattern. Once you have your pattern, you can cut out and sew one up in 15 minutes or less!To Make Your Pattern

We need to take 3 measurements:Length - measure from mid way between your chest and the bottom of your neck to about 6" above your knee, plus 1" (for the hem). Waist - measure from this same spot to your waist plus 5/8th" (for the top hem).Width - measure your hips at their widest point (complete circumference, not side to side). Now, take off 14" (the apron doesn't need to close at the back, just go around your hips), and then divide by 2.

Now, take some pattern paper and fold it in half lengthways. Put a mark on the paper, on the fold, where your length measurement is. So, for example, if I am 28" from upper chest to above the knee, I would make a mark on the fold 28" from the top of the paper.

Now, mark off where your b>waist measurement is on the same fold. For me, this is 12" down, so I make a mark on the fold 12" from the top of the paper.

Now take a ruler, and at your waist mark point, mark a line out as far as your width measurement (now you can see why we divided by 2, as we have the pattern paper folded over!).

Now just mark a straight line from your width marking down to where your length marking is, then across to the fold (to see a diagram of this, just click here).

For the top of the apron, draw a line on the diagonal from your width marking to the top of the pattern paper. The width of the top of the apron is a personal choice. I have mine around 8", but the fuller your figure, the more generous you should be. Just don't forget to add on hem allowance for each side, and then divide by 2. So for my apron, my diagonal line hits the top of the pattern paper 4½" from the fold (8" wide, plus 2 hem allowances of 5/8th" divided by 2).Materials & Notions

For the waistband and neck, I use cotton webbing, about ¾" wide, and in similar colour to the fabric I am using. This is so much easier and quicker than making your own! For the waist ties, you will need 40" (cut in two pieces). For the neck, you need 1 piece only (which we will sew into the top hem). Take your tape measure and measure from one side of your chest, round the back of your neck, to the other side of your chest (where the top of the apron will be). For me, this is 20", so I would buy 22" (extra for hem allowance).

The fabric for your apron should medium weight, and can be any colour or pattern you choose – check out the remnants table for a real bargain! For me, a yard of fabric will do in almost any width, but if you are not sure, take your pattern or measurements with you to the fabric store – the assistants there will help you get the right amount of fabric.Making Your Apron

OK, doing all the above will take you more than 15 minutes, but you only have to do all those measurements and making of the pattern once. Now, let's make our apron!

Lay out your fabric, pin on the pattern, and cut out.

Cut your cotton webbing into the three pieces – one neck piece, and two waist ties.

Sew a hem on one end of each of the two waist ties.

Now, pin up your hem allowance all around the apron. Once that is complete, we need to go back and insert the waist ties and neck piece (to see a diagram of this, just click here).

The waist ties should be inserted into your folded over hem allowance at the point where your waist line starts to go up on the diagonal. With the apron right side down (hem facing you), slip the webbing into the hem allowance, and then fold back over the hem allowance – we want to stitch over the top of the webbing and hem. Make sure you put the webbing in the right way so that your hem at the other end will be facing inwards once the apron hem is sewn!

Now do the same with each end of the neck webbing. The neck ends are attached at the top outer edges of the apron.

Sew. Iron. Done!!

If you're going to do any sewing, you need some scissors. In fact, even if you aren't doing any sewing, every household needs some scissors! They're a useful tool, so it's important to have at least one pair.Scissors vs. ShearsFirst off, though people often use the name interchangeably, scissors and shears aren't really the same thing and are meant to perform different tasks. Shears are used for the heavier cutting jobs, whereas scissors are best used for lighter cutting jobs such as trimming or clipping threads.Shear StrengthA pair of shears generally measures about 6 inches or more in length. To hold the shears, there is a small ring handle for the thumb, and a larger one for inserting two or three fingers. Holding the shears by placing your fingers through these rings gives better leverage to perform the heavier tasks for which shears excelScissors Are SmallerScissors range in length from 6 inches on down to 3 inches or even less. Besides being smaller than shears, the handle rings are of equal sizeChoosing Quality Scissors and ShearsMost scissors are made of steel. There are two main types of steel used for scissors. The first type, carbon steel, is used to make scissors with the blade and the handle formed in one continuous piece. This type of steel is very strong and stays sharp. Scissors made from carbon steel are usually plated with nickel or chromium to prevent them from rusting. The other type of steel scissors are those made from stainless steel. A plastic handle is usually fitted to the metal blade. These scissors aren't as sturdy and don't retain a sharp edge as long. They're also harder to re-sharpen. However, they are generally much cheaper.Types of ScissorsThere are many types of scissors available. Here's a small sampling:* Applique Scissors: Offset for level cutting* Bent Handle Dressmaker Shears: Allow the cutting blades to rest flat on the table* Easy Grip Scissors: With larger handles for those having difficulty holding scissors* Embroidery Scissors: Used for cutting embroider threads* Finishing Shears: Either as pinking or scalloping shears, used to cut ravel-resistant seams* Heavy-duty Shears: For cutting leather, upholstery, drapery, etc.* Thread Snipping Scissors: For cutting loose threads off sewingThere are also shears made for left-handed people, household scissors (all-purpose, poultry shears, etc.), paper scissors for children, scrapbooking scissors, electric scissors and more. For just about any task, there's some kind of scissors or shears that will do the job.Caring for Scissors and ShearsThe first and foremost rule of scissors: Scissors should ONLY be used to cut the materials for which they were designed.Do not, I repeat, do NOT use shears meant for cutting material for household tasks like cutting paper. Using scissors for something other than the materials they were intended to cut will dull the blades.Scissors and shears should be kept dry and dust free, with an occasional oiling at the screw. Keeping them in a safe place like a sewing box, or with higher quality cutting instruments, the box they came in, will help protect the points. Also, scissors should be stored in a closed position. Setting down scissors in an open position is the most common cause of dull blades.High quality scissors and shears can be re-conditioned by the manufacturers or other companies providing that service.Summing Up Scissors and ShearsFor scissors to be used round the house, cheaper scissors work fine. If they become dull or broken, it's cheap to replace them. For cutting fabric and other sewing tasks, a good set of shears is a wise investment.Take care of your scissors and shears, and they'll reward you with easy cutting for years to come.

For thousands of years, Dzi (pronounced as “jee”) beads have been deeply entrenched in Tibetan culture. The Dzi beads, being Tibetan’s most precious living gemstone and charm are worshipped, revered and passed down from generations after generations. Did you know that in Tibet, the ancient pure Dzi beads can be used for mortgage purposes in banks! As with all things ancient and mystical, there is plenty of folklore associated with Dzi beads. One legend has it that demi-gods threw away their Dzi beads when they became ever so slightly blemished, which explains why the Dzi bead is also regarded as the “Heavenly Stone” by the Tibetans.

Tibet, being the former home of the Dalai Lama, has always been associated with the mystical and the holy. There is no denying that the beads’ very origins certainly lend it a metaphysical air. It is believed that the Dzi Bead has the ability to protect its wearer from supernatural “bad” forces. Many believers claim that donning a Dzi bead is akin to having an invisible cloak protect you from the intangible negative elements and energies. Evil spirits, sickness, misfortunes and sudden death are kept at bay with the presence of a powerful Dzi bead. Dzi can also balance the body of the wearer’s yin yang and five elements, hence improves the body’s immunity system and promotes overall health. Other reasons people wear Dzi beads include to usher in greater wealth, for spiritual enlightenment and even just as an aid in enhancing a feeling of calm within oneself.

The mysterious Dzi beads are shiny stone beads that often feature a universally recognized pattern, usually that of ‘eyes’, circles, squares or certain stripes and wave patterns. There are also some pieces that boast some rare patterns and are equally potent in their protective powers such as one that has the silhouette of the Goddess of Mercy Kwan Yin outlined on the bead. The different patterns found on the surface of the Dzi beads all serve a different purpose.

One-eyed Dzi beads are generally meant to promote brilliance and growth in wisdom while a 13-eyed Dzi will promote tranquility and serenity. A 21-eyed Dzi is believed to help fulfill all your wishes and enhance fame and recognition luck. It also gives you strength and courage to face all obstacles and problems. For the savvy businessman, the three-eyed Dzi will also certainly serve you well as it is said to help in bringing prosperity and wealth. A 15-eyed Dzi imparts the wearer with Heaven's Luck. Someone with lots of Heaven Luck will enjoy smooth sailing and unobstructed ride in whatever endeavors. Opportunities, windfall, and good business luck will come to him/her. The most favored bead is usually the nine-eyed one, as it is said to have the powers to bring about compassion, power and glory. Reputed to be the most powerful and prized of all Dzi beads, a 9-eyed Dzi is believed to bring the most complete blessings. It helps the wearer gain power and influence, fame and reputation. 9-eyed Dzi bead also brings windfall and speculative luck, attracts good fortune, promotes health luck, clears obstacles in your life journey and gives protection against misfortunes and negativities. A 2-eyed Dzi is a love charm and a powerful enhancer to attract or enhance love and relationships. For singles, the 2 Eye Dzi bead will enhance your chances of finding love partners; for lovers, it will strengthen your relationships and bring you marriage opportunities; and for married couples, it will reenergize passion and hold out the promise of a marriage being gloriously happy.

The Dzi bead can be worn by everyone regardless of race, religion, gender and age because these beads are not meant to be religious. Its main purpose is to promote the good aura of a person.

The hobby of collecting coins involves spending money from the very start so it is good to join a coin collectors group to get ideas and help from knowledgeable and experienced collectors.

You need somebody to buy your coins from, and it may be hard to find a coin dealer of good repute when your are new to the hobby, so having someone that has been in this hobby for years can be of great help to guide you on choosing an honest and knowledgeable coin dealer.

Begin by acquiring a big magnifying glass and examine coins in a bright area so you can spot mintmarks, errors and to clearly read dates on worn or damaged coins.

Decide on what coins to collect and buy a “bookshelf folder” for that series.

You must also have storage, such as clear tubes made of plastic or coin tubes having top screws to keep your coins in until you are ready to put them in a coin album; storage can also be good for keeping duplicate coins.

You must learn about different coin values. Follow what types of coins are sold, and how they are priced, based on dealer pricing. You also will need someone or some references that will show you how to evaluate the accurate value of a certain coin based on mint mark, age, color, surface and condition.

"A Guide Book of United States Coins" or universally known as “the red book”, which is published yearly, provides a good outline of the U.S. coins history, information on basic coin grading, coin descriptions from past to present including a list of errors to watch for, average U.S. coins retail cost, and an explanation of errors which occurred in the “minting process”.

Monthly publications from “Coinage” (coin collecting magazine) contain many useful facts and information as well articles about your new found hobby plus a lot of great photos.

The newspaper, particularly in the numismatic world section, will be of great interest to you especially when you become more and more involved and interested in your hobby and want to remain up to date with the present happenings in the world of numismatics.

As you grow more experienced in coin collecting, your "eye for coins" will improve and develop maturely so that you now will be scrutinizing more carefully the features and details such as coin lettering, making certain that the letters are not blemished or blurred, but are still distinguishable.

You will be spending so much interest and concentration on the coin’s general state that eventually you can walk away from certain coins that show evidence of abrasion, and will then be experiencing the fun side of coin collecting.

Spend ample time reading, looking at photos, learning from experienced collectors and asking as many questions as needed from not only other collectors, but dealers as well. The hobby of coin collecting is a continuing process that will last for as long as you are continuing the hobby.

Your knowledge and training will save you a lot of money as well as make you money when the time comes, but more importantly, have fun while learning. Take pleasure in what they call the "Hobby of kings" that has turned to be the "King”of hobbies.

Keep on studying and learning, because the better you understand, the more that you will enjoy your new found hobby.

The hobby of coin collecting can give pleasure and fun to an individual of any age.

Finally, Many coin collectors began their collection when they were young children, collecting dimes or pennies and many of them have made coin collection a lifetime hobby.

In today's fast-paced world, quality time with the family is getting harder to find. It's difficult enough to find the time to eat dinner together, let alone find the time to do hobbies together. But somehow we manage to find that time, even if it's just an hour or so each night. Since quality time is so precious, finding the right hobby for the whole family to participate in might be a bit of a trick, but it's not impossible.Jigsaw PuzzlesPuzzles are a popular hobby many families enjoy together. Puzzles may not be high tech, but they do foster time for conversation and bonding between family members. First decide whether you want a large puzzle, or a smaller one. Set aside 30-60 minutes each night to sit down and assemble it together. Family members can even work on it when nobody else is around. When it's finished, glue it together and frame it, or simply take it apart and start all over again another time.Board GamesPlaying board games are a fun way for families to spend time together after dinner without staring at the TV. Some games can be completed in an hour or so, but extended games like Monopoly can be spread out over a week or longer, depending on how much fun you're having with it. You'll find that you can laugh together and the time will go by before you even know it.Outdoor FunFamilies that play together tend to enjoy each other's company. Finding something that you can all enjoy in the outdoors helps a family to bond. Activities can be as simple as tossing around the Frisbee or hiking along an area trail. Turn one of these activities into a hobby by participating in them regularly. You'll have fun getting to know each other and you'll even get some exercise in the process.Try Something UniqueUnique hobbies can add spark to your family time. Photography, while quite involved, could be an interesting hobby for a family to do together. This is one hobby you can tailor to your family's skill level. Whether it's simple digital photography or building a full-blown dark room in your basement, photography leaves a lot to be explored. Or try writing a book together. Have fun passing the story around and let each member of the family add a new chapter. When it's done, you can self-publish the book and have fun designing a cover or adding photos to the content.Whichever hobby you choose to create a close-knit family relationship, make sure it's something that everybody will enjoy. If it's a chore for one person, they will likely hate doing it and they'll only resent it. If you need to, try out several different hobbies until one finally "clicks." You can even participate in several different hobbies rather than sticking with one. Maybe each family member will have their favorite and you can rotate the hobbies each week. The important thing is to spend time together doing something that everybody can appreciate.

The discovery of a hobby that stirs a passion within is truly a joyful thing. What makes it even better is when you can share it with others. Finding a group that shares your hobby interests is a great way to get socially active while doing something that you love. Most towns and cities have plenty of hobby related groups and clubs that are free to join. Don't be afraid to get involved. It's a great way to relax and enjoy new people that you already know you share common interests with. Community bulletin boards are a great starting point for tracking down a hobby group right in your own neighbourhood. Many people make public announcements or invitations regarding such groups. Keep your eyes open for these types of things. Often libraries and community centers provide space for hobby organizations to operate. Stop by and inquire. You may be surprised how easy it is to connect with other enthusiasts. Newspaper ads and a browse through the classifieds section may turn up a decent number of results as well. If for any reason you live in an area where there is no physical hobby meet ups, consider looking online. Online groups are surging in popularity as they allow one to meet others who share their interests from all over the world. Join message forums where you can post your advice and opinions as well as receive it from others. Virtually everything can be found online so no matter what it is that occupies your recreational time, there will be an internet group focused on it. It's also a great way to come across people from your own local area that you may not have found otherwise. Blogs are increasingly popular for discussing information on any topic one may be knowledgeable on. Search for blogs that discuss the hobby that you enjoy most. Chances are high that you will find more than you can read in one sitting. This is a great way to get first hand advice and tips from someone experienced in your hobby. Alternatively, start your own blog if you feel you have something worth contributing in regards to your personal opinions and experiences. Share what you know while making connections along the way.If you truly have little luck locating a hobby group, consider starting your very own. All it takes is a few people with a shared interest to start a group. Print up flyers to post on bulletin boards or even start a website to help draw people in. If the hobby you love is common enough then you should have no problem acquiring members equally interested in joining a hobby group. Sometimes it is simply a matter of making it available in order to see results. A hobby is a relaxing way to reduce stress while enhancing creativity and fun. It's only natural that one would wish to seek out others to share that fantastic experience with. Take the initiative to use available resources and you should be pleasantly surprised.

When most people consider the term hobby they imagine things like art or collecting. But hobbies do not have to be limited to specific activities or stigmas. There are many types of hobbies that speak to the adventurous side in people as well as the artistic. Never make the misassumption that hobbies are low key ways to pass the time. There are several ways to get wild and crazy all in the name of your hobby.Getting up close and personal with the outdoors is a hobby beloved by many. Skiing, fishing and camping are just a few of the physically interactive hobbies you can enjoy. The best part is that they are all things that you can do on your own, learning as you go. For the really daring types, try hang gliding or sky diving for a real rush. Of course activities like this should be done with the utmost in safety and care. Safety should never be compromised for anything. Those who truly love being tourists may claim travel to be their hobby. It can be an incredible adventure to pack up and fly off to a new and foreign destination. There is nothing quite so exciting. Go sight seeing to a city like Paris or New York or try an exotic island known only to the locals.Have you ever taken a moment to gaze into the wonder of the starry galaxy? Astronomy is a well loved past time by so many. All you need is a good telescope and you're all set. Of course if you live in the city you may have to travel outside town to get a good view of the stars but its well worth it. Print off a reference from the internet to help you pick out things like the big and little dipper.Who would have thought that something as fabulous as wine tasting could be considered a hobby activity? It is though. Sipping delicacies from all over the world goes hand in hand with gourmet cuisine. Take a cooking class that teaches students the preparation of exotic dishes. Between wine tasting and fancy dinners, it will be hard to find a fun hobby that can compare.Though many people do not find learning to be fun, learning a new language opens up a whole world of possibilities and adventure. Taking a language class allows you to become part of another culture, even if only in word. It can also be beneficial when traveling to that far off country you've always wanted to visit.Everything from fun drama programs to belly dancing and even karate can be that adventurous hobby that you've been seeking. Get your body moving while your mind is active and feel the amazing results. You don't have to be highly skilled at something to enjoy doing it. A hobby is anything that you love doing outside of the regular day to day lifestyle of work and obligation. Don't hesitate to go the extra distance in finding one that suits your need for adventure.

This article is all about my 71 year old mother Annie. She is, by far, the most generous person you could ever wish to meet in your lifetime, well with her clothes anyway, this is her story….

This shopping HOBBY started about 20 years ago when she was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to visit Texas (my father is an avid Country and Western fan). She took with her every conceivable piece of clothing you could possibly imagine, she even resorted in filling up my fathers suitcase with her clothes, because if she wanted to, and had the space, she could not have got a racing snake in her suitcase if she tried, it was full to bursting! So all in all she had got roughly about 40 kg of clothes and shoes for a 3 week holiday.

Upon arrival at their Hotel in Houston, my father suggested they go and have a look around the shops, and as this was the first time either of them had been to America they did not have a clue what to expect…..they very quickly found out and my mothers HOBBY was born!

They had a fabulous holiday, my mother shopping every day in shear awe at what was on offer and at such reasonable prices, and my father visiting all the country music outlets. She had a very big decision to make when it came to packing her case for their journey home, with baggage allowance limited to just 30 kg each, she was in a dilemma to say the least. The only compromise was to leave half her clothes and shoes behind at the hotel, of course these were the clothes she bought with her all the way from England, and in their place pack her new American clothes and shoes she had so much pleasure buying. Of course, she was absolutely devastated at having to leave all her clothes in Texas; after all she had had them for decades, so it was difficult to leave them. I often wonder what the hotel thought about this, perhaps it was something that happened often who knows.

Back safe on British soil and in the comfort of their own home, she became discontent with her wardrobe facility in their bedroom, surprise, surprise! As all the children were now grown up and flown the nest, it was a great opportunity for my father to knock two bedrooms into one large room, thereby giving extra room for him to construct larger wardrobes for mummy dearest to fill, and fill she did.

She strutted around the village with her tail feathers fully extended for all to see. She was so proud of her new trendy clothes she had so much pleasure in buying on her trip to Texas. Annie delighted in all the lovely compliments she was given by young and old, she had suddenly become interested in Annie. She had not had a very easy life, she had 5 children by the time she reached the age of 25, this was no mean task to say the least. Her confidence and self-esteem was always put on the backburner because her kids just had to come first and Annie second, it was just her way. Maybe she had deprived herself all those years of being herself that she actually forgot she was Annie, she just thought of herself as a wife and mother with no rights of her own, perhaps that’s why she gained so much confidence in herself; almost overnight, she had suddenly become an expert in a field she really knew nothing about, but liked the person she had become because of her love for clothes, her newfound Hobby.

Before embarking on her holiday to Texas Annie had no Hobbies, she simply did not have the time to spend titivating herself, her words not mine. For me and my siblings this newfound mum of ours was a little worrying, she was dressing up every day in her refinery, even wearing makeup….a rarity in those days, and meeting friends for lunch, so you can say she became a Lady who Lunches in a very short space of time, but she did look good, really good, and she knew it, and she made sure everybody else knew she looked good.

It goes without saying the main topic of the ladies conversations at these lunches were Annie’s clothes! On the days she was not lunching with her new friends she was scouring all the local villages for little boutiques that could supply her with the unique clothing she had become accustomed to buying. Of course none of them came up to scratch, there simply was no comparison with her Texas boutiques, and she took delight in telling the shop owners too. On the odd occasions we would be dragged to these shops, kicking and screaming may I add, to be introduced to the proprietors, followed by a spate of gentle abuse from Annie advising the proprietor of how they had no idea than the man in the moon in buying techniques, and that they should take some lessons from the Americans! Oh Lord, please let a big hole open up from nowhere and let me disappear, I was never that lucky. Of course her generosity was faultless, we always came away from one of her hobby haunts sporting some new grossly overpriced piece of clothing, these generous gifts gave her so much pleasure, almost as much pleasure as if she was buying it for herself. It doesn’t stop the guilt though, I would love to partake in her Hobby, suffice to say my bank balance would not survive one day shopping with her let alone everyday.

She outgrew her wardrobes as time went by, the buying of clothes did not slow up she continued EVERY DAY to shop. When is this ever going to stop we thought. My father never questions her about her Hobby because it makes him happy that she has finally got the time, money and inspiration to go out every day and shop purely for her, and that is exactly what she did, believe me, every day.

She has now taken over fully the third bedroom in their house with wall to wall wardrobe space, well that was only a matter of time I suppose. These wardrobes are full of items of clothing, still unworn with price tags still intact. One of the main things I have forgotten to mention is Annie never buys anything that she would term as cheap; her motto is You Get What You Pay For. We all know she is right, but none of us can afford to go out to these little Boutiques she frequents every day and pay £100 for a tee shirt, we just cannot justify it, at the end of the day we had a very good teacher, I think she forgets that now. On saying that, I suppose if I had a particular Hobby which I enjoyed and got as much pleasure out of as she does, and given her age, I suppose I could justify spending the obscene amounts of money that she spends every day, because when all is said and done, it is her only Hobby and it makes her so happy, my dad is not complaining because he knows she comes home every day with a story to tell and an armful of fancy shopping bags…….If she is happy, he is happy, it makes for an easy life. Bless her heart…This article is written for my beautiful mum who I love with all my heart. I am very proud of her; she is an inspiration to us all, including the proprietors of her chosen Hobby Boutiques. This is not the end of Annie’s story, it is just the beginning …………….watch this space.

Perhaps this is an IllNESS, we as a family, like to think of it as her Hobby………Unless you know different!

With America's aging population a lot of towns have not one but many retirement and adult communities in them. Many of these retirement communities hold craft shows, yard sales and other events to promote social activities while generating a little extra money from the surrounding township.
If you are a bead jeweler or jewelry artisan of any sort then you should definitely check out some of these retirement communities to see if you can be a vendor at their next craft show. Not only is their table space often dirt cheap or even free, but you are given the chance to promote your jewelry to a large audience of people who may not otherwise venture out to see you at any other storefront or fair.
However, if you are going to make and sell jewelry for older women, especially senior citizens, then you may need to make some physical changes to your jewelry to make sure it suits them and their needs. Here are a few ways you can modify your bead jewelry to appeal more for your older clients:
Use Easy To Open Clasps: You'll quickly learn that arthritis and reduced hand dexterity makes opening and closing typical small clasps difficult for older people. Some senior citizens avoid wearing jewelry altogether because it is simply too difficult to put on and take off. You'll want to use easy to open larger clasps on your necklaces and bracelets. You may want to consider using magnetic clasps of some sort. These are not as secure as more traditional clasps but they can be opened and closed much more easily by older people.
Consider No Clasps: You may want to skip the entire clasp issue entirely by making over sized necklaces and bracelets that can easily slip over the head and wrist. You will want to bring your jewelry tools with you so that you can shorten pieces for customers right at your table if your bracelets are simply too large for thinner wrists.
Choose Textures Carefully: You may want to try to choose non-allergenic materials and stick with beads that are more rounded than chunky and sharp. A bracelet of sharp square Swarovski beads may look great, but if the rubbing of the bracelet against the wrist all day is going to cause a skin irritation then someone may not want to buy it.
Clip Earrings: Some older people move away from using pierced earrings for the same reason they shun small tight jewelry clasps: earrings are simply too small and difficult to wear and remove. Consider making to clip on earrings that are slightly larger than the norm but don't dangle too much. You may need to test out several clip on kits until you can find one that you think most older people will want to use.
Eyeglass Holders and Bookmarks: Sure, beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings will still sell, but consider making more non-traditional jewelry items such as jewelry chain bookmarks or beaded eyeglass holders. You'll be amazed at how popular they can be!
Selling jewelry to older people is usually a lot of fun and can be a very rewarding experience. You'll learn a lot about life just by talking and watching your older customers. If you really want to please them then you'll definitely want to take their needs into consideration and offer them something unique and made especially for them.

Jewelry makers and hobbyists love beads. Without beads, designs just can't be put to the test or created. Of course, while we can draw pictures on paper, or come up with hopeful dreams in our heads, beads is a must for all jewelry makers. While money may be tight at times, there are ways to purchase beads even if money is tight. There are even ways to make your own beads too. If your wallet has a hole, or the well is running dry in your home, read on to find out some easy ways to save money to keep up with your growing bead collection.

Are there magazines in your home or colorful pieces of paper? If you own a bottle of glue, a bottle of some type of clear gloss, or even clear finger nail polish, you can create your own set of paper beads. Recycle your old magazines by finding color patterns in some of your old magazines. Tear out pages and measure out small long triangle like strips of paper. Cut them out and roll each strip onto a toothpick. Glue the point of the strip to the other point of the bead and let it dry. Clear coat it with some gloss or clear finger nail polish, and you can have your own set of paper beads. There are plenty of ideas for making paper beads all over the internet. By searching for "how to make paper beads" on internet search engines such as Google, you can create paper beads. You can also make your own beads with femo or baking play. Form the clay into the shape of bead you want, create a hole with a toothpick, bake it, and then paint it the colors of your choice. There are many ways to create your own beads without breaking the budget, or hardly spending a penny. With supplies around the home, you can be as creative as you want.

A great place to find old beads and findings is antique and thrift shops. Look for old jewelry that can be taken apart easily. Most of these stores have old pearl jewelry, jewelry with unique and unusual glass beads, and perhaps styles that haven't been seen anywhere else. Bring in the old, to create new designs that may have not even been thought of. By using old jewelry, your jewelry pieces can have a little piece of history to tell a story. While looking for old pieces of jewelry, check out the buttons in the store if they sell them. Old buttons can make great center pieces in any jewelry design. If you have buttons in your home, see what kinds of creations you can make using them. Visit your local sewing store, and buy unusual beads to make your designs. Buttons are also great to use for charm bracelets too or even a unique pair of earrings.

If you are a sucker for online purchases, you can still save money by shopping for wholesale bead lots on websites such as Ebay or Artbeads. Log onto Ebay, and type in "wholesale beads," or "beads" to see what kinds of deals you can find. Sometimes you can buy larger collections in bulk and save money where you may spend more just purchasing a couple of designer named beads. Artbeads offers free first class shipping in the United States. There Swarovski crystals are affordable, and can be purchased for as little as 0.10 each. Just by searching for wholesale beads or discount beads online, its possible to come around to some great deals. Ebay and Artbeads just happen to be a couple of the best places online to buy.

So if your cash is low and the economy has been taking its toll on your household budget, it is still possible to enjoy your hobby without spending much money. Use your imagination, and look beyond the items that may be available in your home to create your designs. By using unique and odd items, you might just come up with one of the best designs to be sold on the market yet.
